The fief of Grua was first granted to the Bocchio family in 1372, and later regranted to the Carbott family in 1794.

Grand Master de Rohan-Polduc created the grant to Saverio Carbott-Testaferrata-Ghaxaq in 1794 with remainder to his male descendants from first born to first born in perpetuity. Saverio Carbott Testaferrata enclosed four pedigrees with his petition in order to prove his direct descent from the `illustrious and noble` families of Testaferrata, Abela, Avola, and Axac. Perhaps Grand Master de Rohan had no option! On the 30th December 1794, he granted the title of Baron of Grua to the `Magnifico` Saverio. But the newly created Baron postponed his investiture until the 4th February 1795, by which time he had persuaded his benefactor to incorporate in the original patent of nobility the extension of his title to his sixteen year old son, Giuseppe and his future male descendants on the basis de primogenitor in primogenitum. Invariably, the Grand Master accepted these petitions.

Just a note of Saverio Carabott`s ancestry, the Axac family was truly inter-connected with much of the medieval nobility of Malta and Sicily. The Montalto family whom were Sicilian Barons whom can trace their ancestry to the Normans in Sicily. Dr Saverio`s uncle was married to a descendant of the Sovereign Dukes of Naxos in the Greek Islands. Dr Saverio`s wife was Anna Bigeni, the daughter of Dr Giuseppe Bigeni JUD, a leading Judge of his day. Her sister was married to the Maltese Baron of San Cosimo. The Bigeni family of descendants of the Sicily noble family of Gioeni. The first Baron had several children, his daughter both married into nobility respectfully (Baroness of Benwarred and Countess of San Paolino d'Aquilejo). The eldest son, Giuseppe married to a distant kin (Montalto de Ribera) who was married into a Maltese noble family.

Several families had inherited the title of Baron di Grua. The Carbott`s dying in direct male descent in the 19th century, passing to the nearest heir, the Delicata-Carbotts. The 5th Baron died unmarried in 1888, the title passing to a descendant of the 2nd Baron di Grua, this time the Borg-Carbotts.

The title moved yet again from the 6th Baron died in 1915, without legitimate issue, passing on to his brother, Francesco Saverio, becoming the 7th Baron.

Francesco Saverio, had many children from two marriages, ensuring enough heirs to carry the title, upon his death in 1936, his son of his first marriage succeeded him. William Borg-Carbott, becoming the 8th Baron and also died unmarried, and was succeeded by succession to his nephews, Peter, and the present holder, Daniel, as the 10th Baron di Grua.

The Borg-Carbott descendants from the 7th Baron di Grua are now in Malta, England, United States of America and also in Australia.
